Dominic Carter is a British-Colombian professional tattoo artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. He began drawing at the age of 10 with graphite pencils. Though this was Dominic in his artistic infancy, it’s an experience that left an indelible mark on the approach to his work, leading him to specialize in Black and Grey tattoo art.
After leaving home in the UK at 18, he moved to Bogotá, Colombia. It was here that interest developed into a passion. After enrolling in a fine arts programme, Dominic dropped out and chose to learn the craft of tattooing in a small shop located in the burgeoning creative hub, Zona Rosa in Bogotá.
After 5 years of slow, painstaking progress, Dominic had built a strong portfolio of work and had set his sights on returning to Europe. With the shadow of Brexit looming large, this decision would be critical to developing his practice. A studio at the time called Psycho Art Tattoo (now Tattoo Art Karlsruhe) decided to take a chance on Dominic and add him to the team. He arrived with one small suitcase and a desire to be the best tattooist he could be. In 2022 he moved to Auckland, New Zealand to finally settle down. He now works in a bright corner of the world renowned Seventh Day Studio.
Dominic’s style combines hints of contemporary realism while taking a more illustrative approach, instead of a photorealistic direction. Allowing his tattoos to appear more ethereal, fantasy-like, without losing any of the form or the function of their original references. Realistic, while still feeling transformative.
